The Italian Senate passed a government vehicular homicide bill with the law 41-23th March 2016, which became effective on 25th March 2016. The law aims at decreasing the still high number of heavy accidents which occur every day on the state territory.

All cases that result in death or serious injury will be treated by police as an indictable offence, and those convicted will be subject to much tougher sentencing. More specifically, “whoever causes by a negligent act the death of a person in violation of the rules of road traffic shall be punished with imprisonment from 2 to 7 years”.
